Man With A Band has become an annual and iconic institution on the Melbourne music scene, featuring more than 50 bands over the past decade. On April 22, 2018, we put on our ninth showcase, featuring a jam-packed lineup of top local acts on the hallowed turf of Melbourne’s home of rock, The Tote.
Kicking off at 4pm, entry was by donation, and punters enjoyed tunes from Melbourne outfits Closet Straights, Sunnyside, Huge if True, Sordid Ordeal, Goldteeth, Longterm Romance, and The Howling Fantods.
Man With A Band employee and Sordid Ordeal band member, Laurence Hewson, was pretty pumped in the lead up to the event, saying: “as far as a company goes, Man With A Van is a very culturally rich place, full of actors, artists, musicians etc. We like playing at Man With A Band as the lineup is incredibly diverse in terms of genres. It really is indicative of all the different tastes of people within the company – no one is any better than anybody else, just different. It’s a hell of a show.”
As well as showcasing local talent, Man With A Van partnered with Australian not-for-profit, The Global Women’s Project who received all proceeds generated from the event in support of their five-year goal to aid over 60,000 women with tools and resources through a truly trailblazing campaign.
The Global Women’s Project CEO, Briony Mackenzie, explained, “we want to partner with organisations who are serious about gender equality. Man With A Van has demonstrated a commitment to achieving equality and shares our vision to help organisations that exist to provide women with equal opportunity for education, independence and entrepreneurship.”
Man With A Van’s Director, Tim Bishop, is thrilled to be supporting this initiative, “we’ve been looking for a charitable partner, and we’re keen for this to be a women-focused organisation. We are huge advocates for gender equality across the globe and have also been committed to supporting this closer to home by encouraging other genders to apply for positions with us, in what has typically been a male-dominated industry to date.”
